How to edit the navigation bar

The navigation bar is shown on the left-hand side of DS for SCOM. It is made up of folders and dashboards, a Favorites menu, a search, and the System menu.

You can drag to change the width of the navigation bar by moving the mouse in from left to right, the navigation bar divider is highlighted and a resizing cursor is shown.

The navigation bar can be collapsed by clicking the left arrow.

The navigation bar

There are several ways to edit the navigation bar in DS for SCOM:

Drag and drop

Published dashboards can be moved between folders, including Team Folders, using drag and drop functionality directly on the navigation bar, as long as the folder is open and already contains at least one dashboard. This functionality is available to administrators and authors with rights to the Team Folders.

For more complex scenarios, such as moving folders or moving dashboards to empty folders, administrators can use System > Edit Navigation.

Authors and owners can use the Folder Details pages and the Move button on published dashboards to sort dashboards within a folder, and move a dashboard to another folder such as an empty folder.

Using System > Edit navigation

The global navigation editor is accessible only by SCOM administrators (Types of users in SquaredUp DS) from System > Edit navigation or System > Administration > Content > Dashboards.

This allows SCOM administrators to reposition globally viewable folders and Team Folders on the navigation bar, as well as the ability to move any globally viewable dashboards.

Globally viewable (normal) dashboards are shown simply by the dashboard name.

Globally viewable folders (normal folders that appear on the navigation bar for everyone) are shown by a folder icon:

Team folders are shown with this icon:

Managing the dashboards within Team Folders is done from the Folder Details.

Click on the dashboard 'handle' to drag it to a new position, for example, drag it to the right to move it into a subfolder.

Reordering content is saved automatically and any changes are instantly reflected.

There are 3 icons across different elements of the navigation editor when hovering on a folder:

The edit team folder icon is shown next to Team Folders and clicking it will take you to the Folder Details page where you can view and sort the dashboards within the Team Folder.
The view folder button takes you to the folder itself to view or edit that folder.
The delete button will delete items. This deletes the dashboard or folder and sub-contents completely, not just from the navigation bar. (Admin users can restore deleted dashboards and perspectives from the Recycle Bin

Sorting dashboards within a folder using Folder Details

Each folder has its own details page which shows the contents of the folder. Administrators can go into the Folder Details page to sort dashboards within the folder or add subfolders.

If it is a Team Folder or part of a Team Folder, then only SCOM administrators and users with author or higher permissions to that Team Folder have access.

  1. In SquaredUp DS navigate to the folder where you wish to rearrange dashboards.
  2. Click on the ellipsis next to the folder name and then Folder Details:
  3. Click on the Edit this folder button.
  4. Click on the dashboard 'handle' to drag it to a new position.

Moving a published dashboard using the Move button

  1. Browse to the dashboard you want to move. Alternatively, you can also open a dashboard from the Folder Details page by clicking Edit this folder, then clicking on the View dashboard button.
  2. Click the edit this dashboard button:
  3. Click the Move button:
  4. The Team folder dropdown list will show all the folders you have permissions to move this dashboard into. Administrators will see everyone in this dropdown list enabling them to move this dashboard to the globally viewable navigation bar. Other users will only see Team Folders they have permissions to edit.
  5. Select the folder you want to move the dashboard into.
  6. Drag the dashboard into position in the navigation structure. If there are no dashboards in the folder to position your new dashboard within, just click the Move button.
  7. Click the Move button at the bottom of the section to complete the move.

Favorites menu

Even when the nav bar is collapsed the Favorites (star) button gives you easy access to your favorite dashboards.

In System > Personalization you can sort and remove favorites from the Favorites menu, (no folder structure is supported).

The Add Favorite button on a dashboard will add that dashboard to your Favorites menu on the nav bar.

Even when the nav bar is collapsed the star button still gives you access to your favorites.

In System > Personalization you can sort and remove favorites from the Favorites menu, (no folder structure is supported).

Orphaned Dashboards

System > Edit Navigation > Orphaned Dashboards is where dashboards which are no longer on the navigation bar are shown. This can happen if dashboards are added to the system from backup.

Administrators can add any dashboard shown here to the navigation bar by opening the dashboard, going into Edit mode by clicking Edit this dashboard, then clicking Move.

Editing the Open Access navigation bar

Dashboards on the Open Access navigation bar can be managed from System > Administration > Content > Open Access

See Sharing Dashboards with anyone - Open Access.

Any user that is viewing an Open Access dashboard will be able to open any other Open Access dashboards on the Open Access navigation bar.

Dashboards made available as Open Access are no longer controlled by the Team Folder view permissions, and therefore potentially viewable to all users.

The Open Access nav bar cannot be resized.

How to change the SquaredUp DS home page (start page)

The default SquaredUp DS homepage that shows when you click the SquaredUp logo or first log in, is the first dashboard on the navigation bar. On a new installation this is the 'Getting Started' dashboard.

You can change the default home dashboard which will change the default homepage for everyone. Individuals can set their own personal home dashboard which will override the default.

Changing the default home dashboard

To change the default homepage browse to System > Edit Navigation and drag the dashboard you want to become the start page to the top of the list of dashboards. Click on the SquaredUp logo, it will show the dashboard you placed at the top of navigation list.

Setting a personal home dashboard

The Set Home Dashboard button at the top of each dashboard allows you to set that dashboard as your personal home dashboard.

A panel opens which allows you to Set Home, if no homepage is set, Clear Home if this dashboard is already set as the homepage, or Replace Home if another dashboard is already set as the homepage. The home dashboard will then be shown first when you log in or click the SquaredUp logo. This replaces the default home dashboard, which is the first dashboard on the navigation bar.

In System > Personalization you can see which dashboard is set as your personal home dashboard. Clicking Clear Home will revert you to using the default home dashboard.
